What would you do?

I don't think I've ever mentioned it before but my job is quite unique. Not so unique that nobody else in the world does it but it's a job that only exists in very large companies and usually only 1 or 2 people do it. So, it's pretty unique. Therefore, it requires a unique set of skills and education. Ok, it doesn't require it but it's helpful.

This means that I have 2 designations and a degree (and now I am getting a second degree) plus I have experience in a specific industry. This makes me fairly marketable. And yet, I choose to work for a company that doesn't pay me as much as I could get elsewhere because I believe in my job and think that I make a difference in the world by working for this company. (very lofty of me huh?)

The other day, I got a call from a head hunting company. I usually get a few per year. Not because I am looking but because there are so few of us out there that our names get around and we get calls. This one wanted me to move back to Alberta and pay me a crap load of money? I make about $75,000 gross per year now and the job the head hunter was talking about starts at $110,000 plus bonus!!!!!

holy poop!

I declined. Mostly because I am in school right now and I love where I live. I'm not loving my job these days because I'm not as challenged as I would like to be but I think that in the next two years things will improve and I can take on more responsibility.

So, I said thanks but no thanks. And it has been eating away at me every since. Not that I want to change my mind but I sure would love to earn $110,000 per year! But I don't want to live in Alberta, I want to keep going to school in BC, and I really like my boss and co-workers.

What would you have done? Would you have pursued it?

  1. I think you did the right thing. As the old saying goes... money can't buy you happiness. You two are building a life there and are very happy being there. The difference between what you make now and what they offered is pretty significant... but it's not like you're destitute right now. You are comfortable. It's not like you "NEED" that job. The money would be nice but... are you willing to give up your home? I think you made the right choice.

  3. No I wouldn't have pursued it. I'm sure there'll be other opportunities. Before I started school, I was looking for a new job. But now that I am doing my masters, it's exhausting. I don't think I'd be able to cope with MORE stuff in my life and that's why I think you made the right choice.

  5. Yes, I would have done the same thing. I see money as a means to live. I would never give up happiness or home for money. You and Boris make a very good combined income... I think if you took this offered job and moved back here, you would regret it every day.

  6. Since you are in school definitely the right choice. You and Boris are making your life together where you are - what did he think when you told him?

Perhaps a time will come in the future - shortly I'd say - that may see an opportunity to increase your wages now to get closer to the carrot they dangled out there at $110,000.

  7. Boris was surprised and it got us contemplating where we would ever consider moving to (for the right money). It was a fun talk because there was really nothing at risk. :)

  8. I think it depends on two things:

    1) how much you want to keep living in BC / how much you DON"T want to live in Alberta, and

    2) what the cost of living is in that part of Alberta compared to your part of BC ... you have to judge income relative to local cost-of-living

  9. Well, it if was about affordability then Alberta is where I would go for certain. The housing costs alone make it much cheaper but then you look at taxes and gas and other things and Alberta is more affordable plus a bigger paycheque.

  10. I have a web site where I give advise on penny stocks and stocks under five dollars. I have many years of experience with these type of stocks. If their is anyone that is interested in these type of stocks you can check out my web site by just clicking my name. I would like to comment . I do not think that we will see real improvement in the economy until we see sustainable job growth. Recently the number of jobs created has been running around two hundred thousand a month. The GDP report that just came out recently was only 2% this is not nearly high enough to sustain employment growth of two hundred thousand jobs a month Another factor holding things back is stagnation of wages and benifits. This is good for business owners but terrible news for workers.
